Checkers

Quick start

This Checkers page keeps the important round information visible while the board stays clean: whose turn it is, which side you are playing, and the current difficulty. That matters because checkers improves through accurate reading, especially when forced captures start shaping the position.

Rules and controls

Pieces move diagonally forward onto empty dark squares. When a jump is available, it must be taken. Reach the far edge with a regular piece and it becomes a king, which can move diagonally in both directions. You win by capturing all opposing pieces or leaving the opponent with no legal move.

Tap or click a piece to see its legal destinations. The most important habit is to check what forced jump your move might give the opponent on the next turn.

Beginner tips

  • Keep pieces connected so one move does not leave a single checker hanging.
  • Before moving, read the forced jump sequence for both sides, not only your first idea.
  • Think about king lanes early. Promotion changes both attack angles and escape routes.
  • Do not break a good shape just to play an aggressive-looking move.

FAQ

Why do I keep losing pieces to forced jumps?
Because the position is being read one move too late. Always check what compulsory capture your move gives the opponent.
Should I trade pieces early?
Only when the exchange improves your shape, king race, or mobility. Trading automatically is rarely the best rule.
When should I think about kings?
From the start. Promotion lanes influence good moves long before a piece reaches the back row.
